Yoshi Wada

Yoshi Wada (1943–2021) was a Japanese-American Fluxus artist and sound sculptor born in Kyoto and based in New York. Joining the Fluxus movement in 1968 after meeting George Maciunas, he studied with La Monte Young and with North Indian vocalist Pandit Pran Nath. His practice centred on drone, sustained overtone environments, and custom instruments: metal pipe horns up to twenty feet long, large reed instruments named the Alligator and Elephantine Crocodile, and Scottish highland bagpipes. His landmark installation The Appointed Cloud (1987) filled the Great Hall of the New York Hall of Science with computer-controlled pipe organ sound.
