Wyndham Lewis

Wyndham Lewis (1882–1957) was a British painter, novelist, and critic who co-founded Vorticism — one of the most significant British modernist movements — and edited the vorticist journal BLAST in 1914–15. Born in Canada, Lewis grew up in England and studied art at the Slade School of Fine Art before becoming a central figure in the London avant-garde in the years preceding the First World War.

Vorticism was the British modernism's answer to Italian Futurism and French Cubism, combining machine aesthetics with a fierce British energy and a theoretical program that Lewis articulated in the polemical pages of BLAST.
