William Basinski

William Basinski is an American composer born in 1958 in Houston, Texas. Working primarily with tape loops and analogue decay, he developed a practice of recording material onto magnetic tape and allowing the medium itself to disintegrate during playback — a process documented in the Disintegration Loops (2002), recorded as the tapes deteriorated on 11 September 2001, with the resulting footage of the burning Twin Towers inseparable from the release. His work explores memory, entropy, and time across albums on 2062 and other labels, and he lives and works in Los Angeles.
