Ursel Schlicht

Ursel Schlicht is a German pianist, composer, and musicologist specializing in jazz, improvisation, and the intersection of music and gender studies. She holds a doctorate in musicology from the University of Hamburg and has researched the working conditions of women jazz musicians including Marian McPartland and Geri Allen. Moving to New York in 1994, she worked in the city's free, experimental, and jazz scenes before returning to Germany, where she now teaches improvisation at the University of Kassel. Her SonicExchange project, which premiered at documenta13 in 2012, brought together 50 artists from nine countries and continues as a series exploring improvisation and cultural exchange.
