Timothy Leary

Timothy Leary (1920–1996) was an American psychologist, writer, and advocate for psychedelic research whose cultural influence extended well beyond his academic work. As a musician and recording artist — and in his later career as an enthusiast of early personal computing and virtual reality — he produced several audio projects that engaged with electronic music, including the album You Can Be Anyone This Time Around (1970) and later cyberdelic electronic works. His association with John Lennon, the Grateful Dead, and the broader counterculture gave his musical work a context that cannot be separated from his identity as a cultural provocateur.
