The Batcave
The Batcave was a London nightclub that opened in July 1982 at the Gargoyle Club on Soho's Meard Street, quickly becoming the defining venue of the British goth and post-punk scene. Founded by Specimen's Ollie Wisdom and Jon Klein, it drew regulars from Bauhaus, The Cure, and Siouxsie and the Banshees, with DJs spinning electro, industrial, and darkwave. Its visual aesthetic — black clothing, theatrical makeup, elaborate hairstyles, and an embrace of mortality and decadence — became the template for goth as a subculture. It closed by the mid-1980s as underground appeal gave way to tourist curiosity, but its brief existence left a lasting imprint on goth fashion and identity.
