Tetsuya Umeda
Tetsuya Umeda (b. 1980, Kumamoto, Japan) is a sound artist based in Osaka, working at the intersection of installation and performance. Active since the early 2000s, he constructs site-specific assemblages from everyday objects, such as fans, balloons, tin cans, and dog whistles, wired together with minimal electronics to generate sound through gravity, airflow, and chance.
His pieces unfold visibly before audiences, reflecting the particular conditions of each space and moment. Umeda has performed and exhibited internationally, including at the Yokohama Triennale and Aichi Triennale, and was co-recipient of the Tokyo Contemporary Art Award alongside Haji Oh.
