Sun Ra

Sun Ra (Le Sony'r Ra, c. 1914–1993) was one of the most original and prolific musicians in jazz history, moving from Fletcher Henderson-style swing to free jazz and beyond, sometimes in the same song. Claiming to have originated on Saturn rather than Alabama, where he was actually born, he built a cosmology around the African-American experience, ancient Egyptian mythology, and outer space, using the Arkestra — his large, continuously evolving ensemble — as the vehicle for an ongoing creative experiment that lasted nearly fifty years.
