Sukandar Kartadinata

Sukandar Kartadinata is a Berlin-based musician and instrument builder who navigates between modern technologies and traditional craft. His musical background combines classical guitar, high-school prog rock, no-wave fake jazz, gamelan, and DIY synth and FX circuits — a mix he refined in the mid-1990s while working at the music technology institutions ZKM (Karlsruhe), STEIM (Amsterdam), and CNMAT (Berkeley), and through the Topophonien project. He studied computer science at FH Karlsruhe. His instruments are built from code and microchips rather than wood and brass, and are typically custom-made to the specific needs of individual musicians or media artists.
