Stuart Fowkes

Stuart Fowkes is a British sound artist and field recordist based in Oxford, best known as founder of Cities and Memory, one of the world's largest collaborative sound art projects. Launched in 2015, it presents paired recordings for each location: an original field recording and a reimagined version by a contributing artist. The project has grown to encompass thousands of sounds from over 140 countries, contributed by thousands of artists, exploring themes including migration, climate change, protest, sacred spaces, and polar ecosystems. Fowkes treats field recordings as documentary material and raw material for transformation, listening as a starting point for reimagining a place.
