Stephan von Huene

Stephan von Huene (1932–2000) was an American-born artist and sculptor based in Germany who created kinetic and sound sculptures — mechanical instruments and automata that produce rhythmic, polyrhythmic, and quasi-musical sounds autonomously. His work includes Totem Poles, a series of sculptural columns equipped with reed organs, and Schreibmaschinen, typing machines that perform rhythmic textural works. Exhibited at major institutions internationally, von Huene occupies an important position in the history of kinetic art, sound art, and machine music, his works presaging later investigations into robotic and algorithmic sound generation.
