Sonic Youth

Sonic Youth was a New York-based band formed in 1981 by Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon, Lee Ranaldo, and later Steve Shelley. Central figures in American alternative rock and no wave, they developed an extended vocabulary of alternate guitar tunings, prepared strings, and noise, recording seminal albums including Bad Moon Rising (1985), Daydream Nation (1988), and Goo (1990). Their position bridged independent underground culture and major-label accessibility while maintaining formal experimentation — releasing challenging noise works alongside more conventional songs. They broke up in 2011 following Moore and Gordon's separation; Gordon's memoir Girl in a Band (2015) documented their history.
