Selten Gehörte Musik
Selten Gehörte Musik ("Rarely Heard Music") was a free improvisation ensemble active from 1973 to 1978, based primarily in Stuttgart and Berlin. Its members — Dieter Roth, Gerhard Rühm, Oswald Wiener, H.C. Artmann and Dominik Steiger — were primarily writers, poets and visual artists who had emerged from the Vienna Group and related Austrian literary avant-gardes of the 1950s and '60s, and who came together to improvise without formal musical training or methodology.
The group met monthly at members' homes — particularly in Roth's houses in Stuttgart, Berlin and elsewhere — to improvise collectively with piano, voice, toy instruments, household objects and whatever materials were at hand.
