Scanner

Scanner is the alias of Robin Rimbaud (born 1964), a British sound artist and composer based in London. From the early 1990s he scanned radio frequencies and mobile telephone conversations (before encryption became standard) and wove the captured transmissions into electronic compositions — a practice generating significant discussion about surveillance, privacy, and public space. Albums including Scanner (1992), Delivery (1994), and Mass Observation (1994) on Sub Rosa established his reputation. He has since worked extensively in contemporary dance, theatre, film, and visual arts, collaborating with artists including Mike Kelley and Michael Nyman.
