Sapto Raharjo
Sapto Raharjo (b. 1955, Jakarta) is an Indonesian composer and performer who has spent decades integrating traditional Javanese musical techniques with electronics and computer technology. As a child in the 1960s in Yogyakarta, he studied gamelan and Javanese dance as a member of the dance and karawitan group Arena Budhaya, developing a deep grounding in the tonal systems and performance practices of Javanese classical music.
In the 1970s, he became a rock and folk guitarist and began exploring the possibilities of joining pentatonic gamelan scales with diatonic instruments using found materials.
