Ryoji Ikeda
Born in Gifu, Japan in 1966 and based between Paris and Kyoto, he began his career in audiovisual production at Spiral Gallery in Tokyo in the early 1990s before joining the Kyoto artist collective Dumb Type in 1993 as a sound collaborator. His practice uses pure data, mathematics, and code to generate immersive audiovisual installations and performances that convert information into light and sound at extreme scale. His work matrix received the Golden Nica at Ars Electronica in 2001, and in 2014 he was awarded an artist residency at CERN in Geneva, where he collaborated with physicists on particle physics research.
