Ron Kuivila

Born in Boston in 1955, he studied under Alvin Lucier at Wesleyan University, graduating in 1977 with degrees in music and mathematics, then completed an MFA at Mills College under Robert Ashley and David Behrman. A professor and former chair of the music department at Wesleyan, he composes music and designs sound installations around custom-built electronic instruments. He pioneered the use of ultrasound in live performance with In Appreciation, introduced live sampling in Alphabet, and has contributed to the development of SuperCollider, the open-source platform for real-time audio synthesis.
