Rolf Julius

Rolf Julius (1939–2011) was a German sound artist born in Wilhelmshaven, based in Berlin. He coined the term "small music" to describe his practice: quiet, carefully placed sounds emerging from small speakers embedded in materials — pigment, stones, sand, bowls of water, glass — arranged in intimate configurations that require close physical proximity and sustained attention from the viewer-listener.

His installations distribute delicate acoustic events across architectural and natural spaces, placing the listener in a state of attentiveness to sounds that would otherwise be inaudible or overlooked.
