Rick Smith

Rick Smith (b. 1959) is the producer, composer, and keyboardist of Underworld, the British electronic music group he co-founded with Karl Hyde. Smith's production is defined by attention to texture, space, and the integration of live and electronic elements that distinguishes Underworld's records from their contemporaries. His work on albums including Dubnobasswithmyheadman (1993) and Second Toughest in the Infants (1996) established a model of electronic album-making balancing formal rigour with physical impact. Beyond Underworld, Smith was musical director for the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games with Danny Boyle, whose soundtrack topped charts across Europe.
