Rafael Toral

Rafael Toral is a Portuguese musician born in Lisbon in 1967, performing live since 1984. He began in guitar-based drone with the art-rock band Pop Dell'Arte, before his 1994 solo debut Sound Mind Sound Body established him as a distinct voice in feedback and loop-based ambient guitar. In 2003 he abandoned the guitar for a self-built electronic rig, treating silence as structural material within his ongoing Space Program. He is a member of the electronic orchestra MIMEO and has worked with Jim O'Rourke, Alvin Lucier, Phill Niblock and Sonic Youth. His 2024 album Spectral Evolution, on O'Rourke's Moikai label, returned to reverberant, microtonal string textures.
