Phurpa

Phurpa is a Russian ritual music ensemble founded in 2003 in Moscow by Alexei Tegin, an artist and musician who has spent decades studying Tibetan Bön-po liturgy and its associated sonic practices. The group performs Tibetan Bön-po liturgical chants, using overtone singing, large horns (dungchen and gyaling), bells, cymbals and ritual drums in performances that reproduce the specific timbral, rhythmic and spatial dimensions of the ritual tradition.

While Tegin and his collaborators are not Bön monks, the ensemble has worked extensively with Bön teachers and has developed a practice of disciplined fidelity to the material's ritual forms and sonic specifications.
