Peter Weibel
Born in Odesa in 1944 and raised in Austria, he studied medicine and mathematics in Vienna before joining the Viennese Actionists in the mid-1960s and developing a post-conceptual practice spanning video, virtual reality, and digital art. He directed Ars Electronica from 1992 to 1995 and became director of ZKM Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe in 1999, building it into one of the world's most significant media art institutions. A prolific theorist and curator, he shaped discourse around new media across five decades. He died in March 2023.
