Peter Roehr
Born in Lauenburg in 1944, he produced more than 600 works in just five years before dying of cancer in Frankfurt am Main in 1968 at the age of 23. His practice was organised around the principle of unvaried serial repetition applied to commercial imagery, typography, film, and sound. His Film-Montages I–III (1965) assembled fragments of television advertisements on 16mm to create time structures related to serial music, while his photocollages derived largely from printer proofs for a 1964 advertising campaign. Though he refused association with any specific movement, his work anticipated conceptual art and minimalism.
