Pavel Büchler

Born in Prague in 1952 and trained at the Prague School of Graphic Arts and the Institute of Applied Arts, he left Czechoslovakia in 1981 and settled in the United Kingdom. His practice encompasses installation, video, sculpture, and works on paper built around conceptual wit and the repurposing of obsolete or discarded objects — broken pencils, tape recorders, slide projectors — into visual and linguistic propositions. He is Emeritus Professor in Fine Art at Manchester School of Art. He received the Northern Art Prize in 2009 and the Paul Hamlyn Award for Artists in 2012.
