Pan Sonic

Pan Sonic was a Finnish electronic duo comprising Mika Vainio and Ilpo Väisänen, active from 1993 to 2009 and originally named Panasonic until a trademark dispute forced the change. Working with analogue electronics, oscillators, and custom-built devices, they developed a terse, powerful sound — subsonic bass, harsh pulses, abrupt silences — that redefined the possibilities of minimal electronic music. Albums including Vakio (1995), A (1999), and Kesto (2004) remain central reference points. Mika Vainio died in 2017; Väisänen continues work under other projects.
