Oval

Oval is the project of Markus Popp, a German musician based in Berlin who emerged in the early 1990s as a key figure in the glitch music movement. Working with deliberately damaged compact discs — running them through players and processing the resulting errors — Popp created looping, shimmering textures that treated digital malfunction as compositional material. Albums Systemisch (1994), 94diskont (1995), and Dok (1995) on Mille Plateaux were foundational to the aesthetics of clicks-and-cuts and post-digital music. After a long hiatus, he returned with the massive Ovalprocess (2010) and has continued releasing work exploring software, error, and musical form.
