OOIOO
OOIOO is a Japanese experimental group led by Yoshimi P-We (Yoshimi Yokota), also drummer of the Boredoms, formed in Osaka in 1995. Where the Boredoms pursued collective ecstasy through noise and drumming, OOIOO developed a more rhythmically intricate and vocally foregrounded sound — complex polyrhythms, free-form singing, and dense percussion layered into sprawling, difficult-to-categorise compositions. Releases including Feather Float (1999), Taiga (2006), and Gamel (2011) document an evolving practice that draws on free jazz, traditional Japanese music, gamelan, and noise without replicating any of them. The group has remained consistently active under Yoshimi's direction.
