Ø

Ø is the solo alias of Finnish musician Mika Vainio (1963–2017), best known as one half of Pan_sonic alongside Ilpo Väisänen. Active under the Ø name on Helsinki's Sähkö Recordings since the early 1990s, Vainio debuted with Metri (1994), a double LP of dense, rhythmic minimal techno recorded live to DAT using analog gear. Subsequent releases including Oleva (1996) marked a decisive shift toward non-rhythmic abstraction — immersive, evolving drones that diverged sharply from Pan_sonic's harsher industrial pulse.
