NSK

Founded in Slovenia in 1984 while the country was still part of Yugoslavia, Neue Slowenische Kunst comprises the music group Laibach, the painting collective IRWIN, and the Scipion Nasice Sisters Theatre. Its core artistic strategy — termed the retro principle — involves the ironic redeployment of avant-garde forms and totalitarian iconography to dissect ideology, nationalism, and cultural identity. Laibach's name, the German word for Ljubljana, was deliberately provocative. In 1992 NSK declared itself the NSK State in Time, a borderless entity with no territory that issues passports to non-territorial citizens worldwide.
