Nicolás Spencer

A Chilean-Spanish artist and researcher based between Vienna and Berlin, Spencer trained as a forest engineer in Chile before studying photography and film at EICTV in Cuba. In 1996 he founded TRema, the first Chilean experimental sound collective, and in 2007 co-founded LaMe, Chile's first media lab, a platform for open experimentation in sound art, hardware hacking, and interactivity. His installations set massive physical materials — rock, metal, wind — against the immateriality of sound. The Terra Ignota project documents seven years of fieldwork in Tierra del Fuego, Patagonia, and Antarctica.
