Nate Wooley
Nate Wooley (b. 1974) is an American trumpet player and composer working within free jazz, electroacoustic improvisation, and contemporary composition. Classically trained yet steeped in free jazz, he has developed an approach to the trumpet that extends its range through extreme dynamics, multiphonics, and extended techniques combined with electronics. He is known for solo performances of extraordinary concentration, as well as ensemble work with artists including Anthony Braxton and Mary Halvorson. His ongoing Seven Storey Mountain — a cycle for large ensemble named after Thomas Merton's memoir — has grown into a sprawling meditation on drone, density, and collective ecstatic release.
