Michel Chion
Born in Creil, France in 1947, he is a composer of musique concrète and a theorist whose writings on sound and image have shaped contemporary film studies. He began his career as an assistant to Pierre Schaeffer at the Groupe de Recherches Musicales in 1970, composing works including Requiem, which received the Grand Prix du Disque in 1978. His 1990 book L'Audio-Vision, published in English as Audio-Vision: Sound on Screen by Columbia University Press, introduced concepts including synchresis and the acousmêtre that remain central to sound studies. He has authored more than thirty books on sound, music, and film.
