Michael Snow
Born in Toronto in 1928, he was a Canadian artist whose practice spanned film, painting, sculpture, photography, and music, and who became one of the most influential figures in structural cinema. His 1967 film Wavelength, a 45-minute zoom across a New York loft accompanied by a sustained sine wave, won the Grand Prize at the Knokke experimental film festival in Belgium. La Région Centrale (1971) used a remote-controlled robotic camera arm to film the Quebec wilderness in continuous sweeping arcs. He returned to Canada in the early 1970s an established figure across multiple disciplines and died in Toronto in January 2023 at the age of 94.
