Michael J. Schumacher

Based in Brooklyn, New York, he is a composer and sound artist whose practice centers on the perceptual and spatial possibilities of sound. Since the 1980s he has created multichannel generative works called Room Pieces, realized through speaker systems designed for specific architectural contexts and presented in galleries, museums, and concert halls. In 1996 he founded Diapason Sound Art, a New York space dedicated to sound-based and intermedia practice that ran until 2011. He is music director of the Liz Gerring Dance Company and teaches composition at NYU Steinhardt.
