Michael Barthel

Michael Barthel (born 1977, Berlin) is a German sound artist and musician based in Leipzig. Working in musique concrète, noise composition, and concrete phonetic poetry, his practice centres on voice and tape machines — a lo-fi aesthetic of brutal simplicity and fragility across more than fifty strictly limited releases. He has released on Tochnit Aleph, Scrotum Records, Geräuschmanufaktur, and aufabwegen, and runs Kunstraum Barthel, a Leipzig gallery and limited-edition publisher. Collaborators include Anna Schimkat, with whom he works in the duo A Vochel Wo Red, and Alessandra Eramo.
