Merzbow
Merzbow is the noise project of Japanese artist Masami Akita (b. 1956), regarded as one of the most prolific and uncompromising figures in noise. Active since the late 1970s, Akita has produced several hundred releases across nearly every format, drawing from industrial music, free improvisation, and avant-garde electronics. His sonic language ranges from brutal walls of distortion to textured compositions revealing a formal awareness beneath the density. Akita's work intersects with S&M subculture, Japanese aesthetics, Dadaism — the name comes from Kurt Schwitters' Merzbau — and animal rights, a vegan commitment shaping releases on anti-whaling and animal liberation since the early 2000s.
