Matmos

Matmos is the American electronic duo of M.C. Schmidt and Drew Daniel, formed in San Francisco in the early 1990s and based in Baltimore since. Their practice is defined by conceptual sampling — building entire albums from sounds derived from a single source or theme, such as surgical procedures, crayfish nervous systems, or plastic consumer technology. The results are compositions of considerable sophistication, marked by a tension between the absurdity of the source and the rigour of the outcome. Long associated with Björk — for whom they served as co-producers on Vespertine (2001) and Medúlla (2004) — Matmos occupy a distinctive place between conceptual art, queer culture, and dance.
