Martine Syms

Martine Syms (b. 1988) is an American artist, publisher, and cultural practitioner based in Los Angeles whose work spans video, performance, installation, and publishing, addressing Black representation, popular culture, technology, and vernacular aesthetics with formal sophistication and critical intelligence. She founded Dominica Publishing in 2007 as a platform for books on Black visual culture, and her video works draw on Black TV, film, and internet culture as formal resources. These works — often involving a fictional alter-ego and a layered approach to narrative, text, and image — include the Lessons series and the sitcom She Mad, mining footage into a fragmentary self-portrait.
