Martin Speicher

Martin Speicher is a German saxophonist, clarinetist, and composer born in 1958 in Püttlingen, based in Kassel. He plays baritone, soprano, and sopranino saxophone, as well as clarinet and bass clarinet, and works in new music and free improvisation. Trained in musicology and philosophy from 1979, he has taught saxophone at various music schools in Kassel and approaches his work from an analytical as well as performative standpoint. Despite this background he does not identify as a jazz musician, situating his practice within experimental music. With saxophonist Matthias Schubert, he co-founded Polytonale, a Kassel series bringing regional improvisers together to present their own work.
