Mark Ernestus
Mark Ernestus is a German producer, DJ, and record shop operator who co-founded, with Moritz von Oswald, the Basic Channel label and its Chain Reaction imprint — two influential platforms in techno. The Basic Channel aesthetic, developed through mid-1990s releases, fused the rhythmic depth of Detroit techno with the spatial processing of Jamaican dub, creating music marked by extreme compression and an enveloping sub-bass richness, influential on minimal and dub techno since. Beyond Basic Channel, Ernestus has worked in dub and reggae as Rhythm & Sound with vocalists including Paul St. Hilaire, and founded Berlin's Hard Wax shop, a key link between Detroit techno and the local club scene.
