Mariska de Groot

Born in the Netherlands in 1982, Mariska de Groot holds a BA in graphic design from Arnhem and a master's diploma from the ArtScience interfaculty in The Hague, where she lives and works. Her practice centres on handbuilt analog instruments that convert light into sound, drawing on the history of optical sound and early media inventions. The spinning patterns of her tone wheels are projected as light on the floor, becoming both instrument surface and performance space. She is a board member of iii (instrument inventors initiative) and has presented work at Ars Electronica, Atonal, and STEIM.
