Mariam Rezaei

Mariam Rezaei is an Anglo-Iranian turntablist, composer and performer based in Newcastle, working across experimental new music, free improvisation, mutant club music and hip-hop. A classically trained pianist turned self-taught DJ, she manipulates samples in real time via digital vinyl systems, pioneering techniques including free juggling, turntable sines, needle dripping and needle weaving. The Wire called her one of the most daring artists using the turntable as an instrument. She performs with the free-music group The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters and the Turntable Trio, and received a Paul Hamlyn Award for Artists in 2022. She lectures in DJ studies at Newcastle University.
