Mam Tuxtla Chico

Mam Tuxtla Chico refers to the musical traditions of the Mam-speaking Maya community of Tuxtla Chico, a municipality in Chiapas, Mexico near the Guatemalan border. The Mam people are one of the largest Maya-language groups in Guatemala and southern Mexico, with rich ceremonial and folk music traditions including marimba, flute, drum, and ensemble vocal music tied to the agricultural and Catholic festival calendar. Recordings of Mam music from this region have been made by Mexican cultural institutions and released as part of series documenting Mexico's Indigenous musical heritage.
