Loraine James

Loraine James, born in 1995 and raised on the Alma Estate in Enfield, north London, studied commercial music at the University of Westminster after growing up on piano lessons, calypso and IDM touchstones like Squarepusher. She began self-releasing on Bandcamp before her 2017 EP Detail led to a deal with Hyperdub, where her 2019 album For You and I, fusing IDM, glitch, ambient and R&B with candid explorations of queerness and anxiety, topped year-end lists at The Quietus and DJ Mag. She followed it with Gentle Confrontation (2023) and, as the ambient alias Whatever the Weather, two self-titled albums. Her 2026 record Detached From The Rest Of You features Tirzah and Alan Sparhawk.
