Lina Lapelytė
Lina Lapelytė (b. 1984) is a Lithuanian artist and composer working at the intersection of music, performance, and visual art, whose practice uses collective singing and durational performance to examine social conventions, emotional expression, and political conditions. She represented Lithuania at the 58th Venice Biennale in 2019 with Sun & Sea — created with Rugilė Barzdžiukaitė and Vaiva Grainytė — a beach opera performed over nine hours daily, in which performers lying on artificial sand sang about climate change and ecological collapse, winning the Golden Lion. Her works often involve non-professional performers, using collective voice to question who is permitted to sing.
