Laurel Halo

Laurel Halo, born Laurel Anne Chartow in Ann Arbor, Michigan, studied piano, guitar and violin before immersing herself in free jazz ensembles and college radio. Her 2012 debut Quarantine, released on Hyperdub, was named Album of the Year by The Wire and established her blend of vocal processing, synthesis and dissonant composition. She continued on Hyperdub with Chance of Rain (2013) and Dust (2017), featuring Eli Keszler, Julia Holter, Klein and Lafawndah. Long based in Berlin before relocating to Los Angeles, she released the album Atlas (2023) on her own label Awe and joined CalArts' composition faculty, moving fluidly between club music, ambient and avant-garde composition.
