Katharina Fritsch

Born in 1956 in Essen, she studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under Fritz Schwegler and has lived and worked in Düsseldorf since. Her sculptures and installations reinvest familiar objects—rats, madonnas, elephants, colour fields—with an uncanny, dreamlike force drawn from Christianity, art history, and folklore. She represented Germany at the 1995 Venice Biennale and has had major solo exhibitions at Tate London in 2001 and the Art Institute of Chicago in 2012. Her work has featured in Documenta, Carnegie International, and Skulptur Projekte Münster, and she is represented by Matthew Marks Gallery and White Cube.
