Kapwani Kiwanga

Kapwani Kiwanga is a Canadian-French artist born in 1978 in Hamilton, Ontario, based in Paris. She studied anthropology at McGill before training at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. Her research-driven practice spans sculpture, installation, photography, video and performance, surfacing marginalized histories of colonialism and the African diaspora. Flowers for Africa reconstructs floral arrangements from African independence ceremonies; Afrogalactica imagines a future through Afrofuturist ethnography. She won the Sobey and Frieze Artist awards in 2018, the Marcel Duchamp Prize in 2020, and represented Canada at the 2024 Venice Biennale.
