Julio Estrada

Born in Mexico City on 10 April 1943, he studied composition with Nadia Boulanger and Messiaen in Paris (1965–69), and attended courses by Xenakis, Stockhausen, and Ligeti. From 1974 he has been a researcher at UNAM's Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas, where he developed a General Theory of Intervallic Classes addressing the continuum of pitch and duration across macro- and micro-intervallic scales. He has written approximately a hundred articles translated into five languages, and edited La Música de México, the most comprehensive publication on Mexican music history. He also directed UNAM's Laboratorio de Creación Musical.
