Joji Yuasa

Joji Yuasa (1929–2022) was a Japanese composer and a founding member of the Jikken Kobo (Experimental Workshop) collective in postwar Tokyo. Without formal conservatoire training, he developed an independent compositional language that drew on musique concrète, graphic notation, and electroacoustic methods. His works — including Chronoplastic (1972) and Projection for String Orchestra (1967) — are among the most significant of the Japanese postwar experimental tradition. He taught for many years at the University of California, San Diego, and maintained productive dialogue with both Japanese and Western experimental traditions throughout a long and prolific career.
